Conference excursion (5th of September, 14:00)
On the afternoon of the 5th of September, we will embark in a wonderful trip around
Azulejos, beautiful glazed ceramic tiles, are one of the key features that make Portugal unique. Deeply embedded in Portugal’s history and culture, they are used all over the country as a prominent form of decoration. They come in many patterns and colors, but historical and religious mosaics in blue and white are a primary theme that adorn famous architectural Portuguese landmarks, covering up large areas of blank wall.
We will be visiting a traditional factory where azulejos are handmade and hand painted. Here are produced flat hand painted tiles as well as relief tiles with different colored glazes, in the style of Hispano-Moorish tiles of the 16th century, that are sold (only made to order) to all the world. In the tiny artisanal factory, you can observe the traditional craftsmanship of this Portuguese heritage at work.
Caves José Maria da Fonseca: guided tour and wine tasting
We will be embarking in a guided tour to the caves of this winemaker founded in 1834, being the oldest producer of table wine and Setúbal Moscatel in Portugal.
We’ll start by the Manor House, which was the Soares Franco family residence until 1974. Built in the nineteenth century, the house was restored in 1923 by the Swiss architect Ernesto Korrodi. With its particularly beautiful façade and gardens, it has always been associated with the image of José Maria da Fonseca. Here, you’ll get to know the essence of a Wine Family with almost 200 years of history, where the values, passed down from generation to generation, are kept alive while allowing the company to project itself into the 21st century. The visit to the Museum House continues with a tour of the ancient wine cellars, including Adega dos Teares Velhos, where the oldest Setúbal Muscatels (Muscats or Moscateis) rest, some of which are relics over 100 years old.
Because a visit to a wine producer with the size and history of José Maria da Fonseca would never be complete without a genuine tasting of the best of what has been produced here for almost two centuries, at the end of the tour, each visitor will have the chance to get to know better some of the wines that make José Maria da Fonseca the prestigious institution it is today. Enjoy this sensory experience!
Azeitão is a vineyard farm area, with cattle, palaces and historical traditions. The region of Azeitão disputed with Sintra the preferences of noblemen and aristocrats. Nowadays, Azeitão presents buildings of some importance as Sintra, and displays areas of great beauty, that convert it into a pleasant summer resort and a weekend refugee for Lisbon’s upperclass society. After free time to visit the typical and charming town of Azeitão, where you can buy traditional souvenirs or just linger in a café esplanada(terrace) to taste the local sweet pies, we’ll proceed to sightseeing the coastal region of the small mountain Arrábida.
Located next to the sea, between Setúbal and the fishing town of Sesimbra, Arrábida NaturalPark is famous for its natural beauty, where the blue of the sea alternates with the white tones of the chalk cliffs and the depths of the green vegetation that covers the mountain range. Vegetation is both from Mediterranean and Atlantic climate type. Preservation of one of the rare examples of Mediterranean maquis in Portugal that can be found here was one of the reasons which led the Arrábida zone to be considered as a genuine international scientific relic.
- Buses will pick you up at The University at 14:00, take you to the different places to visit s and bring you back either to the University or to the hotel (only in Caparica and Pragal).
- The order of the visit differs from bus to bus. Please respect the timetable defined by your guide and always take the same bus number.
Conference dinner (6th of September, 19:00)
The Conference dinner will take place on the 6th of September from 19:00 to 23:30, at Quinta de Catralvos, near Azeitão. This wine property, near Azeitão, is the perfect environment to relax, to learn all about wines, to celebrate important moments of your life and… to dinner.
